How Should a Leather Jacket Fit? A Maker's Sizing Guide
Leather doesn't stretch the way fabric does. Getting the fit right before you buy matters more than with any other garment.
The Golden Rule: Buy It Snug
A leather jacket should fit snugly when new. Full-grain leather relaxes and shapes to your body over the first 20–30 wears — the elbows soften, the shoulders mould, and the jacket becomes yours. If it fits perfectly off the rack, it'll be too loose in six months.
This is the opposite of how most people buy clothes, which is why so many leather jackets look boxy and oversized. Buy it fitted. Trust the break-in.
The Five Fit Points
Check these five points when trying on a leather jacket. If any of them is wrong, the jacket is the wrong size — leather doesn't stretch enough to fix a bad fit.
- Shoulders — the seam should sit exactly on the point of your shoulder, not droop over it. Shoulder fit is the one thing that can't be altered. If the shoulders are wrong, nothing else matters.
- Chest — the jacket should close without strain, but with no more than 2cm of ease. You should be able to layer a shirt or thin knit underneath without the zip pulling.
- Sleeves — the cuff should end at your wrist bone when your arms are at your sides. Leather sleeves don't ride up the way fabric sleeves do, so if they're too long standing, they'll be too long sitting too.
- Length — a biker jacket should sit at the hip, covering the belt but not the seat. A bomber should end at the waistband. A tailored leather jacket can be slightly longer, mid-hip.
- Collar — the collar should sit flat against the neck without gaping. A gaping collar means the jacket is too tight across the chest or the collar is the wrong shape for your neck.

Leather Jacket Sizing: UK vs US vs EU
Leather jacket sizing is inconsistent across brands and regions. Lewis Leathers and Aero Leather cut to UK sizing. AllSaints and Boda Skins cut to a smaller UK fit (closer to EU). Suave cuts to UK sizing but with slightly longer sleeves, because leather sleeves don't ride up.

What If the Fit Isn't Right?
If you buy from Suave and the fit is wrong, we offer 30-day returns on unworn jackets. But before you return, try this: wear the jacket around the house for an hour over the layers you'd normally wear. Leather feels different after it's warmed to your body.
If you're between sizes, size down for bikers (they're meant to be snug) and size up for bombers (they layer over heavier knits). If you're ordering made-to-order, send us your measurements and we'll advise — we'd rather get it right the first time than exchange it.

Full-grain leather stretches slightly — about 2–3cm across the chest over the first month of regular wear. It doesn't stretch in the shoulders, which is why shoulder fit is the most important thing to get right. Corrected grain and bonded leather don't stretch meaningfully because their polyurethane coating restricts the leather's natural movement.
Can a leather jacket be altered?
Limited alterations are possible: sleeves can be shortened (from the cuff, not the shoulder), the body can be taken in at the side seams, and the lining can be replaced. Shoulder width cannot be altered. If you need significant changes, made-to-order is a better route than buying off-the-rack and altering.
